Any other ideas on how to ensure our funds are protected? 

If you think you can manage a mortgage, taxes, insurance and the upkeep of a home while paying your student loans then buying is not  bad idea but if you think you will overstretch yourself renting is nto bad either.

We're getting nailed in auto insurance too.Any ideas why these states?

They are also useful for private phone conversations and could be used for storage of valuables as they could be locked.I'd love to be able to broach this idea with other nationalities and cultures but it's really hard if they're not working very long hours and have hours of free time at home.  

Okay, I have not heard of this strategy but I had an idea.

Down the road, you can also use the 1031 exchange to defer taxes as you go from property to property, as long as they are like for like.I hope that helps get the ideas flowing....
