Starting out attempting to do it virtually is just another weight you've added around your neck.

I think that it was a "risky" choice as I usually use lighter, neutral colors..

You have very little natural lighting, so you should try to add additional lighting.To make it lighter and brighter, change the lighting something that has more bulbs and bulbs with higher wattage (ex. 100w). 

I think that the leuon would help distribute the weight and prevent excessive cracking in the tiles as well.
