But in general even for such circumstances I would still keep the deposit and offer some sort of other gift (plane tickets, help paying for something) that is from you personally, not from your rental business.

I personally consider it a gift card for Amazon, Google, Kodak, Olive Garden, Kohls, The McBucks I got in a stocking as a kid to buy a happy meal.Today everyone has gift cards, tomorrow everyone will have even more secure gift cards to their business using blockchain technology.
