What my broker was telling me contradicted the reading and research that I was doing, so I wanted to confirm what he told me was something legitimate; in other words, I wanted to see whether someone else have done it, and I was just not understanding something.It was just a stupid question, and judging by everyone’s reaction to it, also offensive apparently.

When you sign your tax return, your signature is affixed to an affidavit that says (paraphrasing here) that everything on this return is true and accurate to the best of your knowledge, so if you leave off your expenses, it is a willful misrepresentation, which unfortunately is fraud, and fraud against the IRS is a felony offense, but it gets worse after that.
