If the US makes it harder for people to immigrate and/or less desirable, it's plausible that immigration will no longer be able to offset our smaller family formations (along with potential labor shortage on certain jobs/trades), and we will become much more dependent on older age citizens, similar to what's happening in Japan.

(Houses were still considered temporary in this way in Japan until very recently, and in medieval Europe, most peasant housing was also temporary and rebuilt on average every 30 years, so this isn't really a strange thing.)

I know when my husband is at a remote location...it's hard to communicate - and we both can get very frustrated, but when we were in Japan, we had great internet and no problems/delays in being able to talk to people back stateside.
