I think there is a lot of benefits from starting to invest in a town that you know well and has a lot of potential. 

I know leaving a w-2 isn't an overnight change, but I love the idea of financial independence and would love to not be reliant on it.

Add to that there is currently a ban on foreign buyers in Canada (only a few exceptions and as far as I know they all involve living here).Capital gains taxes apparently used to be higher (before my time).
