I'm by no means a real estate tycoon but I have 17 doors and have replaced a bit of carpet over the past 4 years.To give a sense of the costs of my last carpet install about two months ago:Small SF House (Living room, hall, 2BR w/ closets, 8 stairs and den):92 yards of Galloway River Birch ($6.21 yd): $571 total92 yards of Berberbond Premium 8# pad, 3/8" ($5.67 yd): $521 total8 steps at $8.50 per: $68 totaltax: $79Installation: $97Measurement fee credit: -$35Total: $1302.45The installers were a local installation outfit contracted by HD.

We also finished the attic into a bedroom and flex space (we use it as a TV room), added a half bath, completely remodeled the full bath, and added a huge walk in closet off the master in one of those skinny little awful additions every single little house in Oak Park seems to have.Before (Living Room) - I know you all want to know where you can buy that sofa, but the owner took it with him :)After (living room and shared dining area)Before (dining area and doorway to an AWFUL kitchen - there was about 2' of prep space and only one run of cabinets)After (living/dining and new galley kitchen)Before (kitchen)After (kitchen - doesn't show it, but there are actually two sides to it now!)

This created a master suite out of the 2nd floor with its own private bathroom.Eliminated a closet in the 2nd floor bedroom to make the room bigger.

It went from being a dinky little house with small rooms to being a warm, inviting space perfect for entertaining.For our first floor master suite we removed a closet from the fourth (very small) bedroom that left a door into the larger bedroom on the other side of the load bearing wall.

I think there might be something to this idea: nice carpet in the down master (I myself prefer nice carpet to wood in bedrooms), solid bamboo floors on the first floor (sandable 3-4 times and completely waterproof and fairly hard and sustainably made) and up the stairs, vinyl tile in the laundry room and HVAC closet, and standard carpets in the two smaller rooms upstairs.
