Many of the older furnaces are better built with cast iron heat exchanges, versus steel in later models and have no electronics to fail.

That's my issue - in five or ten years I want more out of the house than what I paid for it...It seems houses haven't appreciated any in that time since they shut down the steel mill and the arsenal.

That is, they don't need stainless steel stoves, updated fixtures etc.

I can only say that we lost the steel industry many years ago and my community never has recovered from that, if we loose the auto industry, you might as well stick a fork in Ohio and many other states, because it really is our last manufacturing base.

Stainless Steel Fridge (Personal): Recently my fridge went out, and after a few diagnostic attempts, it was finally fully fixed on Friday.

I plan to take it apart this summer and clean the burners (hack saw blade to the slots) and seal up any gaps in the cast iron puzzle pieces that comprise the combustion chamber (but first I will blow theatrical smoke inside the chamber in order to suss out where any potential leaks might be).

When you go more than 5 stories above grade you are probably looking at a steel or concrete building which can be a significant jump in construction cost.
