@Jared Kampschroeder CA now allows Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU) and they have ok'd container homes for this purpose, it's great if you already own a home or land in CA.

please advise  SB68 states “Require a permitted junior accessory dwelling unit to be constructed within the walls of the proposed or existing single-family residence.”.  

An ordinance was introduced this week to re-legalize the construction of new "accessory dwelling units" on existing Chicago properties. 

A bonus to look for would be properties with accessory units.

California also recently eased restrictions on accessory dwelling units (ADUs) and junior ADUs.

Some places will call this an accessory dwelling unit- a separate 2  bedroom/1 bathroom unit at the back of the property, not attached to the house.

I just don't get along with people who apply the label of a new political ideology like a cheap knockoff fashion accessory.

Why don't you make some of the home improvements yourself, line up an awesome (but budget) vacation, and see if you can't get her some great deals on the accessories she wants.Finally, why not demonstrate WHY you want to invest - as in hey honey we won't have to go to work, junior can go to college for free, and we can travel year round in just X years if we make these basic changes.. you may actually be able to sway her to your line of thinking if you can paint a clear vision.

If that's the case for you, I would check to see if your town has an ordinance allowing accessory apartments.
