So, moisture is key for your subbase and base. 

Along the way I also was able to get free insulation installed (~10k value) using the local utility energy efficiency initiatives as well as laid plastic sheeting in the bare crawl spaces to help with moisture and bring it up to code. 

Laminate is great but not against water, moisture, or worse (pee) and it warps up.

TIP3.. be gentle with yourself and psyche... these things take time, sure there are a few examples of ppl hitting it out of the park immediately..
