I wanted the doors painted (29 doors including closet doors) and they wanted between 2k-3k just for the doors so I painted them myself.

The first problem was that somewhere in history someone put an illegal 4th apartment in the first floor by closing off the passage from the kitchen to dining room, installing a 2nd kitchen in the old dining room and the tiniest full bath in the front coat closet.

If this is standard, than you can always try to install a small closet (30sf should do it for a stackable unit)  you can look at areas where there is water in the vicinity (think a bathroom and/or the kitchen).   

That's how a home can be filled with it in a relatively short period of time.This type of growth is often found in closets of homes that are occupied.
