Because they cannot afford the house or mortgage payment, and in many scenarios the rent payment is going to be the same or more than the mortgage payment.

Better sell everything and live in an underground bunker. 

It would be like if someone prepared to sell by painting to create fresh visual interest, but chose fuscia and lime green...those colors would certainly catch the eye but I'd never claim that they overdid the curb appeal by painting with too much visual interest.

There may be a couple of houses on the block that do not have driveways so this may not be the only one.
