These have greatly influenced my knowledge and I think everyone should listen to them if they would like to invest in real estate.

As @Nick Rutkowski mentioned, your allowing a person to have a very strong influence in your decision making which will influence your goals.

There's no good way for me to influence the inputs on stocks. 

You can get an investment property without a job but its an entirely new animal and usually requires a very high credit and a good chunk of capital.Typically the bank wants 6-12 months of employment history so get that job and live as lean as possible to build up your savings and research ways to boost your credit to mid 700's if possible. 

However, that has not influenced us in any negative way. 

Don’t be overly influenced by the get rich quick crowd.
