They also have some strict laws about smoke alarms everywhere (there are 6 required in one of our houses with only 1300 sqft - unbelievably loud during testing), and carbon monoxide detectors on each floor.

If you are talking 1970's I would not worry about it because building codes were pretty contempory at that time compared to the 1990's with the exception of requiring ground fault circuit breakers in the bedrooms and maybe carbon monoxide detectors.
