You do have to wet the ceiling down first - spray bottle of water.

Turn up the heat in the house, spray with water out of a pump bottle, Scrape, patch nicks and cuts, texture, vow to never do again. 

Does regular spray bottle work or should i rent something more legit?

The per bottle or can cost is greater when the package is smaller, same with rehab costs on houses.
