Join a local nonprofit board, join the chamber, and network outside of the typical real estate space.

Try the REIA groups and other professional groups like the Chamber of Commerce.

In my short experience, I've found most of that information by calling or visiting the City Hall, Chamber of Commerce, and County Courthouse.  

Always discuss your plans with a real estate Agent, a building official that has been around a while, the Chamber of Commerce, and maybe a city counsel person that has been around for a while.  

I've done the same with the Chamber of Commerce.

You can get a lot of data from a local Chamber of Commerce but the most important statistics you need are in the MLS.
