The shrubs/piles of leaves will hold moisture as the ice and snow melts and it can be a train wreck if it's up against the structure.

You could also get rid of small chunks and black top it, probably cheaper, they may want to bust it up leaving it in place for moisture and freezing, your original probably wasn't think enough and reinforced.

I initially thought I had a moisture issue or leak from 2nd floor but it was none of these things....And BTW there is a method to test if you haev these ceilings.. generally if you rub your fingers against the ceiling if you have calcamine you generally will get a very chalky residue on your fingers....Thankfully this was only used on the ceilings because I have read about it being used on walls as well.

I havent had any issues with them warping, although if they absorb any moisture they will grow a slight bit making them snug in the opening.
