If they all feel outdated and/or sparse, I'm might widen my search parameters to find a place that feels more like vacation versus staying at a vacant property. 

Most of the properties I am sent are outdated and would need kitchens and bathrooms redone, flooring and paint.

I’m planning on doing a DIY shiplap wall around my boring fireplace that won’t cost much and also painting all kitchen and bathrooms cabinets to a nice bright white to get rid of the outdated oak color.

This triplex was a class B property, old and outdated, at the time of acquisition.

It takes a lot of showing to rent an outdated property and only a couple of showings to rent an updated one.

I would suggest targeting homes that need cosmetic upgrades or are just outdated, slowly work through those while you're there, and do a little house hacking by renting out rooms as soon as possible.

It instantly turns me away, it looks mustard color, which makes me think the inside will have lots of wood paneling and be outdated.  

Well, personally I have never walked into a Walgreens that was carpeted, outdated, and had a funky smell, but I have been to many CVS stores that were exactly that.
