Its not terrible to ask that of STR - esp. if you are in a market that is more "utilitarian" and they likely arn't around all day; even in vacation rentals they go out and about for chunks of the day.

Because in reality, by not hiring a property manager, and committing to doing the easier things myself--like unclogging a toilet / shower drain, fixing a light bulb, pest control, calling a plumber--I am committing to be on standby for many hours, which is a sacrifice of peace of mind / being able to leave town or take vacations--and I would like to know if it's worth it.

And perhaps in that case, I am thinking to offer them cash for keys to vacate the property (After the property is vacated and condition of the property is verified) rather than hoping that this will get any better.

I had to use one in NYC when on vacation there one time and they charged 350.00 bucks and I was outraged,, but for me that does 4 to 10 closings a month as a seller it adds up to real money :)Not sure what the on line one charges because same thing this was with chicago title and I did not pay for it since we do a ton of closings with them they accomodate my stingy streak :)
