There are many reasons for the price disparities, everything from location (the hills are usually a few degrees warmer year-round, and above the ice fog), neighbors (typically a Sanford and Sons type hoarding houses randomly about....so nice houses go up next to what looks like a junkyard), no real building codes, so pretty much anything goes, etc.

I consider RE my inflation hedge(lock in low interest, creep up the rent as population and money supply grows, build equity with mortgage pay down, appreciation only considered as icing, but not expecting it).
