Granite tiles -- I've never minded that look if it's well done -- it can look especially clean / contemporary if you use the same tile for the backsplash.

Let me tell you lots of my rentals got pretty back splashes for little more than the price of mastic and a few hours of work.   

I intended to put granite countertops, backsplash, ceramic tile as needed (which was the kitchen and main bath) and finish the hardwood floors hidden under the carpet.

Install new backsplash in kitchen - $12003. 

Kitchen: New flooring, new countertop, tile backsplash, added dishwasher.

You could probably command even higher rents (and increase the value of the complex, if you have more than 4 units) by doing true interior upgrades like upgraded appliances, fancy backsplashes, faux-finished countertops, etc.

In the middle of this though I've already scheduled the final appraisal of the house because with the exception of the counter and backsplash going in into the kitchen my contractor assures me that everything will be completed by the end of June.

did you guys cut the tiles to make the backsplash in the bathroom?

I use thinset on all floor tiles, I only use mastic on backsplashes.

For the counter tops, they do the same thing and they can even create a back splash.
