It means AirBnB has become a dirty word because people do things like get a lease on an apartment in a large apartment building in NYC and “AirBnB” it until they get caught then they get booted and they find another building and do it again. 

How do they normally combat that?

As a Central Texan, I will agree that Killeen has an extremely high crime rate, but they just received a federal grant to set up task forces to help combat it. 

It's so terrible to say, and I get that not everyone can pull themselves up by their boot straps but damn, so much is self inflicted.

I think it is better than auction.com because we do not have to pay bid deposits and get a dedicated account representative to boot.
