Please keep in mind, you may qualify for the 750 hour test for real estate professionals, but need to materially participate in the rental activities as well for it to be considered active (and take the active losses). 

If she lived there for "a little over 6 months each year" that is a good fact for meeting the test.

Then retake the test until you get a 100% correct.  

@Travis Fisher Dry scrape should only be done after asbestos testing...wet is preferred because the texture just falls off so presumably a much lower chance of releasing asbestos fibers.
