In the middle of last year, for my region at least, HUD changed their protocol that now ALL purchasers, owner occupied and non-owner occupied can bid on houses during the initial open bidding period (after the lottery period for police officers, firemen, and teachers).

It however becomes an issue if the following year, your mom wins the lottery putting her at the maximal tax bracket, and you change the split to 90% in your favor in order to minimize the taxes (for instance).

I refer to them as SFHs because to me multi units would mean bigger apartment buildings.I think majority of the people start with SFHs because of the two main reasons: limited funds and easier to wrap your head around SFH investing vs multi unit.If I were to win a $100 million lottery today, I would only look into big multi units because it would give me better rate of return on my time.
