However if it is a luxury such as the ice maker is no longer working, I would disconnect it, remove it and just say 'Sorry with the current rental income I cannot afford to repair non-essential items'.

There is a huge disconnect between the two parts of the industry.

And outside also disconnect all hoses and drip the hose faucets. 

Short of all that, you can hire a contractor to relocate the temperature controls to an inconspicuous location and disconnect the current control to become non-functional.

@Mike S I think the disconnect is between the average rate and purchase price.

You'll need an HD monitor to set up the system, but then you can disconnect it and bring it back only when you need to review footage.

Make sure your account did not disconnect (menu > VRBO > Account).

They wound up disconnecting the swamp cooler hose so that this couldn't happen again.
