Anish Tolia I think its a much longer conversation on some of those markets except London but compared to other US markets North Californa dominates the list of expensive list of cities in basically every list I have seen and that Median home price is equal or more than NYC (depending if you want to compare only to certain areas in NYC).You are also correct and like you I have looked at NYC RE for years and thought the same thing and for many of the same reasons as you stated the prices have kept going up.
