There is enough positive reasons to buy (image, people telling them it is the best thing to do, tax incentives, space, control of costs etc) that I think unless there is a massive disconnect between rents and values (like in Vancouver BC) then people will move to be owners anyways. 

Just to use the microwave they had to disconnect all other appliances including the fridge.
