@Joe Splitrock

That is kind of what I was thinking. It's only two water heaters and I feel like it actually benefits the IRS if I depreciate them across 15 years rather than 5 so why would they care how I file it?

Also, it occurs to me that I could just continue to depreciate at 15 years by changing the asset type to Intangible in TurboTax. Then maybe I can get an accountant to correct everything for next year's return.

Thanks all! I'll look into the amendment forms and then decide whether I think it's worth hiring someone to help.

Oh man, I'm stressing out about this year's filing already. Now I have to mull over an amendment for last year!

I had an accountant prepare my taxes a few years ago and she depreciated some water heaters using a 15 year schedule. I followed suit and did the same thing when I did my taxes last year. Now I'm using TurboTax and it is saying that it should be a 5 year depreciation. TurboTax let me enter what I've paid so far and the depreciated this year based on a 5 year schedule. Is it OK to switch?

TLDR: Can you switch the length of time over which you depreciate once you've started?

This what I finally got back:

"When we get a call there is a $50 service call fee plus a charge for any work done. There is a 1 hr minimum that's why he is seeing that same charge. I also understand its a 5 minute job but we have to consider road time and overhead as we have to pay techs to drive to the property and to the warehouse/home depot for parts if needed this must be considered. I know some owners prefer to do their own work because they know local handymen that do cheap work but we have to consider all the variables not just the actual time it takes to do install a part. I hope that helps answer the question"

There isn't anything in the contract about trip fees. The charges are paid to ARP Contracting which I think is part of Aegis though it may be a separate entity. I've emailed them to find out.

James, this is a property management company in Pittsburgh?

No, the specific fee isn't in the contract. I imagine if I call they will say that that is what the contractor charges as a trip fee. I'm curious if other people in Pittsburgh are being charged similar rates.

Hey all,

I have a Pittsburgh property being managed by Aegis Property Management. I've been looking at the ledger and it seems like they charge me $95 every time they send someone out for any reason. For example they charged me $95 to plug in the oven, $95 to turn on a gas valve, and $150 to replace the water level thing in the toilet tank. Is this reasonable for the area? I know I get charged significantly less for similar things by my management in Ohio.

Thanks in advance!
