The lowest temperature in indianapolis is 27 these days, and I forgot to shut off the water in my house. I won't be back until this Friday. I am wondering whether my house is in danger now. Thanks.

Did it say anywhere on the estimate that they charge $150.

No, the general contractor just came and gave me a oral bid, and said he would send two subcontractors later. He never mentioned any charge for estimation, though I don't know how he dealt with the subcontractors.

Absolutely no.

And I am writing to each of the contractors from whom I asked for bid, saying that this is an open bid, so they may not get the job, if so don't get mad. I don't want to be bother by each of them.

I take full responsibility with my decision. But they have no right to force me to choose them just because they have high quality. And just because 80% of their clients called them back, it does not necessary mean their price is fair.

They are sending the bill, and I won't pay it.

Ok, the guy followed up again, and said the subcontractors who came with him charged $150 for estimation.

How ridiculous! If they charge any for estimation, they should let their potential clients know in advance. I am glad I did not pick this guy and regret that I called him to come for estimation.

So all the plumbing was then replaced with Pex & PVC sewer pipe for about $2500+sweat equity.

So be prepared for surprises.

Your house was built in 1890 and mine was in 1939, meaning my pipes may have another 49 years of life. That is not bad.

Ok, I will hire a plumber to run a camera through the pipe. Thanks for all the information.

Otherwise you can have someone run a camera through the pipes to check for leaks and the overall integrity of the line. Would be a much cheaper alternative than gutting the whole system and fitting it with PVC.

No, no foundation work needed. Only three minor water spots and should be fixed by installing gutters and proper landscaping.

It is an old house built in 1939. Some of the drainage pipe has been replaced to PVC, and majority (including the Stack) is still caste iron. And the cost is about 10 thousand dollars to replace all through the house.

I plan to live in the house for 2-3 years and resell it, so it is partly an investment.

Thanks. The spread is really big. For exterior painting, it ranges from 3000 to 14000.

One honest professional painter told me the exterior painting season has closed in Ottawa, so whoever said he could do it now and fast is not professional.
