Huntsville International Airport in final stages of selection process for Dream Chaser landing site

By Caroline KlappPublished: Dec. 9, 2021 at 9:13 PM CST

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - Huntsville is one step closer in its quest to be a landing site for a spaceplane!

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) held a virtual public hearing Thursday and will soon decide whether a spacecraft can land at the Huntsville International Airport. The Dream Chaser is a mini spaceplane. It needs a rocket to launch it, but it still needs somewhere to land after circling the International Space Station. If it is approved, that could happen at the Huntsville International Airport in 2023.

It’s a project that’s out of this world, but in close reach for the Rocket City.

REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. – As the city of Huntsville and Madison County continues to grow, so does Redstone Arsenal. The arsenal provides thousands of jobs for people in the Rocket City.

One presenter noted that when the arsenal was started, they had a little over 6,000 people ready to work there. Now, they have more than 44,000, and many of the speakers had the same idea when they took the podium: talk of the future and how much the arsenal will continue to grow.

“Redstone has truly become a hub for national defense and security.” Arsenal Senior Commander, Lt. Gen. Donnie Walker was one of many speakers to speak high praise over the growth that’s made the arsenal boom.

The FBI reported they have more than a thousand employees already moved to Huntsville, with multiple facilities being built to train thousands daily.

The Army Materiel Command says they’re hard at work streamlining the industrial base in a way that would modernize the entire Army.

Marshall Space Flight Center, a key player for the SLS launch this coming February, is preparing to help launch the most powerful rocket ever built by NASA.

Huntsville Ranks #6 Among Best Places to Work in Manufacturing

December 6, 2021/in Community Development, Featured, Lead, Manufacturing, News /by Lori Connors

Although the manufacturing industry hit its peak in the U.S around 1969, about 7.5 million jobs have been lost nationwide in the 50 years of industrial decline that followed.

But there is good news. The manufacturing sector is making a comeback here in the United States. What’s more, it’s becoming quite the big deal in Huntsville-Madison County.

To find the best places to work, specific to the manufacturing sector, SmartAsset recently analyzed data for 378 metropolitan areas. This data was then evaluated with regards to manufacturing jobs as a percent of the total workforce, employment growth, income growth, and home affordability.

To further fine-tune its findings, SmartAsset relied on the most recent unemployment data, using it to factor in the overall impact of COVID-19.

According to study, the Huntsville metro area made it into to the top ten out of the 378 metro areas surveyed. In fact, Huntsville ranks number 6, just below neighboring Cleveland, Tennessee.

@Gorden Lopes Think that's an accurate current count, but a couple of hundred openings. I'm starting to see several moving here for them.
