@Doug Shapiro Thank you for taking the time! Those are great points that I hadn't thought of. When you say "cost to rent the units", are you referring to the management side of it? If so, I was planning on self management, at least for my first property. I figured that would be the best way to gain valuable experience. It did seem like good cash flow for the amount I needed up front but without a driveway, I'm not sure how that would affect my ability to rent it. Thanjk you again for the insight!

@Jonathan L Abbey Welcome to BP! I'm a new investor here in Rochester as well. I have learned so much in a short period of time on this site and there seem to be quite a few other ROC investors here as well. I will be looking to buy my first multi family property soon and am always willing to exchange some notes!

@Kevin Romines Thank You! Yes, I intend on buying multiple units over time and would like the use of the funds over time.

@Michele B. I am fortunate enough to have found myself with incredible job security so that is one less worry for me. But I do understand the risk as well. I just feel that I can do something positive with the equity in my home that I worked so hard to get :)

@Chris Mason I would be using the HELOC towards a buy and hold rental, not a flip. Would you still agree that it could still be a model match for that scenario?

Like most new investors, I am working on building capital in order to properly fund my first deal. I have a good amount of equity in my personal home and have a 2 part question to pose here: 1- Is using equity from my home to use towards the purchase of a rental proprty a good idea? 2-If so, would you reccomend refinancing and take cash out or get a HELOC?

@Russell S. Hello and thank you! I am not afraid of a property that needs some work so turnkey is not necessary. I'm trying to focus my efforts to properties on the west side..ie Hilton, Brockport, Greece, Hamlin...etc. I've looked at a couple of properties in the city but have passed on them due to location.

Hello! I'm am new to real estate investing and would like to connect with others in my area of Rochester NY. I have been consuming every bit of information I can from both BP podcasts, forums and multiple books. I am an Army Veteran so I'm not afraid of hard work! I have a fairly decent income from my job and want to spend the next 10 years building a real estate portfolio. Although I have not chosen a specific strategy, I am focusing on multi family/duplex/triplex/apartments. I would not be opposed to single family either if the numbers worked. Thanks for reading! Please feel free to reach out and connect! I'd love to meet you and maybe get some deals done together!
