If you haven't heard this episode of BP Money it touches on househacking in Troy. I don't really know enough to compare the two markets properly, but having house hacked I would definitely account for your personal preferences!  

Different areas are good depending on different goals. School district might matter to some investors but not to others. Do you plan on self managing or hiring a PM? Either way, I've found the toughest part of investing in smaller cities or towns is finding team members (especially PMs). There are just less choices for places with smaller populations. Orange County Investors has a bunch of folks investing in Middletown. 

Straying from the topic of the original post but it appears from this article the owners created some more headaches for themselves. 

I can't speak to the loan amounts, but I've also heard good things about National Bank of Coxsackie. I used Trustco Bank for my first househack, they are a portfolio lender and don't sell loans to Fannie or Freddie. Another one I've heard great things about is Homestead Funding. Not sure where you are but I have names of folks you can talk to if you are looking in Greene County. 

Do you manage it from a distance? I grew up there and would love to invest there, but after self managing my house hack for a year I really like the idea of hiring a property manager!
