House hacking is great!  That's the way I started in the UK, buying as big a house as I could afford and rented it to 4 college friends.  It was like an extension of college; only difference was that my friends were paying my mortgage and giving me $300/month spending money to support my motor-racing.  Several years on and now on the other side of the Atlantic, I am enjoying Grand Rapids and the growth that it has seen since I started investing in 2009.  Took equity from my UK property to start my US investing  in 2009 and have since sold my UK property after 10 years of renting and appreciation to pay down mortgages in the US.  Love real estate and I don't plan on stopping here. 

Starting at your age Jake, you have a solid future ahead if you invest wisely.  You have hit the market at a good time too!
