Post: How to calculate future property taxes? (Buy and Hold)

Hey All,

I had a question about property taxes, I'm looking a few properties on the MLS to buy and hold (already rehabbed properties) and there have been a few listings that have low property taxes. I assume it's based on the current owners assessment back in 2017 before they rehabbed the place.

Though i'm a bit hazy as to what then happens once you purchase that property...
1. Should I be running the numbers based on that old tax assessment or projected taxes based off the purchase price?
2. Are the taxes assessed based on the amount you paid for it.

Example:
Listed price $275,000
Taxes listed on MLS: $1,439 (based on 2017 assessment - last sold for $109,000 pre-rehab)
Tax estimator based of listed price: $5,984

Hope this makes sense, would be great to get your advice.

Cheers.
Paolo

Hey All,

I wanted to reach out and see if anyone can share any insights regarding investing in Kansas City. Considering the city is split between KS & MO i'm wondering how much the state laws differ.  Also, if you recommend any transitioning areas of the city to keep an eye on that would help a lot.  Would be great to connect with local property managers and developers in the area.

About me: I'm an OOS investor from NY with family ties to the KC area.  Looking to buy & hold, small multi-family houses specifically for cashflow.

Cheers.
Paolo

@Lindsay Stewart Cheers mate.  I was just back home last week and saw what my friends were doing back home (investing in OOS) and thought I should apply it over here in the US market.

Does this event cover any OOS investing or is it specifically New York RE?

Hey Mukul,

Regarding overheating are you referring to just the Seattle market or the real estate market in general? Seems like there wouldn't be much difference buying something in Seattle for cash flow, almost the same as here in NYC.  Currently i'm looking at other markets i.e. Orlando, Dallas and/or anywhere that would make the most sense of a buy and hold strategy under $250K for a single family or small multi-fam.

If you have any advice for OOS investing that would help a lot.
Cheers.
Paolo

@Salvatore Lentini

Deciding which city to focus on has been our most difficult hurdle. I live in NYC, but it's too expensive to invest in a property here. I want to focus and invest in another city/state that would have a lower point of entry and a greater ROI.
