Post: Section 8 Tenant - Bounced Rent Check

Have you asked your bank why the check returned? Sometimes they can tell you why (example: nsf, stop payment, account closed, etc), but not always. I would ask them just so that you know. I would give her whatever notice the law allows to pay rent and all fees or quit. It doesn't matter if her bank hasn't told her, she likely knows.

The check maker(s) should file a dispute at their bank.

That can get you sued for 3x the security deposit. If they have stuff there and didn't pay rent, file for eviction. You need to check out your state laws before keeping any money. Plus your state may require sending an itemized list of what was taken from their security deposit, and I don't think "wasting my time and money" can be itemized in it.

Just my 2 cents.

Since you have their number saved in your phone, just let it go to voicemail. If it's something against a city ordinance, they can call the police. I don't think swearing on your own (rented) property is, though.  Maybe depend on the city.

Always check social media, and google their name. You never know what you might find!

Dropping an envelope off at a postal box once a month is a big deal? You don't even have to get out of the car.  My bill pay sends my landlord a check every month, and they send me a receipt, I haven't even asked for it. You should provide a receipt if they are asking for it.

I'm pretty sure you are thinking about a Chapter 13. There is no agreement with a chapter 7, but they do owe anything after the bankruptcy.

Nope. I sponsored my foreign student husband years ago, and we went through the whole rigmarole. He had to apply to become a resident, based on marriage to a citizen. If you are still married after 2 years, apply to become a permanent resident. If still married, one year later you can apply for citizenship. If you break up after becoming a permanent resident, but before getting citizenship, you have to be a resident for 5 years before applying for citizenship.

I am not a lawyer.

If the power company turned off the power so that you could take down the tree, I would def. do something for them. Just my 2 cents as a renter.
