We have a large portfolio of property developments for sale where you could purchase a single apartment or an entire block within a security estate with excellent rental returns.

@Josh Stack,

The current laws in SA are favourable in terms of property investment in SA but the local banks will not finance foreign investors, unless you take up temporary/permanent residence permit.

Feel free to PM me for further details.

Hi Sunil,

Are there any minimums to get invested in ZA?  How about forex restrictions on repatriating profits in USD back to the US or elsewhere out of South Africa?

Hey Stephen, If you think the local bank could be a long term partner, it is worth evaluating if paying a bit more and developing a deep long term relationship would be worth the extra fees. These forums are full of stories of folks who have developed deep relationships with local bankers and once the banks believe in you and know your track record can become excellent long term partners with great flexibility. I haven’t done it myself so I’m not speaking from experience, just the second hand stories from others. If you are in it for the long haul consider what benefit long term relationships can pay in terms of dividends down the road even if there are short run slightly higher costs.

Sounds like a great experience with some responsible tenants. Be sure to give them a good reference!
Another thought, as a new user, it would be good if there were a “hall of fame” forum where threads of particularly high value could be pinned and archived for posterity. It would need to be moderated, maintained and perhaps even locked for future posting by the BP management team. Maybe there is something like this but as a newer user I have not found it or at least it hasn’t been obvious that it exists and that i should start there.
Hey all, Just to jump in and provide some perspective as a newer member. One thing that is really nice about the BP forums is that when asking a question you will either get little response (indicating your question was too specific or poorly phrased or some other issue) or genuine responses. But rarely do you get snotty, elitist - please use the search function first - responses from long time users. This makes the forums a much more welcoming and less intimidating place for new users. As pointed out, new posts skew to be from newer users and there is a high likelihood that the question has been asked and answered multiple times. From my own experience the search function is OK but could be better and allow for more refined/advanced searching. Of course many posters will take the path of least resistance and just post a question - bring me an answer on a silver platter, please! - but at least the forums don’t punish this behavior even if there could be more of a gentle push to help others research more before they post. The thing I would like to see more of on the forums, particularly in responses is less outright opinion and more opinion sourced/referenced/linked with outside material. Lots of folks answer with “do it this way” or “do this and not this” but there is very little citation and documented discussion on why that’s the correct answer. To sum up, it’s a good and welcoming experience to join these forums as a new poster so thanks to the BP community for that. There is a great and helpful culture here which makes it a pleasurable and informative place to hang out. Thanks!

Hey Ian, I have been researching LLCs recently too and have found www.llcuniversity.com to be a tremendous resource. Happy researching and getting into the US market.

Hey @Wihan VanWyk,

I have a long term ambition to pick up one rental in Cape Town so I can justify spending Januarys there as a business expense! I love Cape Town.

Since CPT is such a tourist city maybe you could also consider a simple apt in the city bowl which you could rent out as an Airbnb.

That said - and without having done a lot of research - it seems like Cape Town could be a good area to invest so long as the laws are favorable (I think they are to foreigners owning property) and if the price/rents ratios are acceptable. Certainly spending dollars so acquire properties denominated in ZAR should be favorable from a forex standpoint.

Wihan, Which part of ZA are you looking at? The Cape, JNB or other?
