Newark, like most towns and cities, has good areas and bad areas.  The concern with Newark that seems to be sharing is that the "bad" neighborhoods are dangerous, "war zones" as they're called.

There are other parts of Newark where you wouldn't even realize that you're in the city, or parts that are expected to boom (specifically downtown and the Ironbound).

Sure, there is money to be made anywhere and there's something for everyone in this world.  As a new investor, and this would be for any town, make sure you really research what you're getting in to.

(Personally,  I went to school for 6 years in Newark, commuted through all different parts of the city and have done design projects there. Some neighborhoods are rough, some I'd go out for dinner in. It's something you need to get out and see. Id be happy to give my 2 cents on a house if you need help)

Still not sure yet, to be honest. I have an idea that down the road I'll have a couple income-producing properties. Right now I work in construction and part-time as a realtor, and I'm buying my first condo to fix up, live in and then later rent out. In the mean time, I'm just looking and learning - there's so many ways people make money in the business it's crazy.

Hey @Chris DePrima welcome to the forums. I'm also a young, newbie from NJ. Where are you thinking of investing? You have an idea of what you want to get into?

Hi Andrew - be very careful with what you're doing in Newark... I've met a few people who love the city and make their money there, as a beginner and someone from out of town... I'd make sure to do your research, and like Paul said, meet with some others and get their two cents. There's a meetup I attend (NJ REI Group) that meets first Tuesday at a hotel by the airport, someone would be happy to elaborate.

Now not all of newark is bad, but it's very neighborhood dependent. Do you have something in mind you were looking at?

Hey Richard - I used to work in NY and we did similar projects. Definitely need to start with an architect to get an idea of zoning and other obstacles you'd need to overcome. My old office would be able to help you, let me know if you want me to pass along contact info.

Hey Andrew, welcome to the forums - I'm in a similar boat, would be happy to talk more with you.  I have a bachelors in architecture and work both construction and as a realtor here in town.

Hey @Damian LoBasso, definitely right on the Newark redevelopment. I took a class at NJIT that was all about rentals in Newark and towns along the train lines, inc. Harrison, Bloomfield, Montlcair, and how there's going to be a continued surge in growth in those areas, especially by the train stations. It was all about millennials and their needs for amenities, combined with affordability compared to NYC and Hoboken/JC.

I'm also from the Westfield area - my offices are downtown, I live in Scotch Plains for now.
