Good evening everyone,

I am Jeremy Lewis and I am new to Real Estate. I had the idea to own a bunch of rental properties years ago when I wanted to be a lazy guy who just collected money from others, however it wasn't until more recently that I had the realization that what I had as an idea of a landlord was more of a scumlord and I gave up on that idea quickly. That isn't what I wanted.

After years of traveling around the US for different kinds of work; I had settled in Tempe Arizona for a few years and ended up starting my own business (Handyman), work is going great but I have been missing Akron Ohio a lot over the past few years and so my family decided to move back to Ohio.

In May not only will I turn 27 years old, but we will be moved back in Ohio and I will be reestablishing my company there. My plans for the next year are to go completely debt free, eliminating my truck payment and buying a house (maybe a duplex?) with cash. With that done my family will have yearly expenses of 15k which will be the solid foundation that we need to really build a great RE Empire.

Anyways, it has been good to be here the past few days and I look forward to answering any questions y'all might have and getting to know everyone!

Welcome back to the Cleveland / Akron area Jeremy. Being a handyman yourself is gonna be a big leg up in the Real Estate biz.

Haha thank you. I agree I can do most of my own renovations, and I got my start doing construction in Akron so I have contacts in the contracting world that do top notch work. Thanks!

Thank you! If nothing else it will be good for my primary business and I can always purchase out of state real estate, but I really won't know until I get my boots on the ground. Thank you so much!

As a Handyman I don't do large jobs very often, at most between $1,000-2,000 for the whole job and I never charge a customer before the job is complete UNLESS the person who hired me doesn't live in the property I am contracted to work at. I've never had an issue with payment nor with getting the jobs complete since my company has very little overhead (except marketing) and keeps most of its money.

Hello! Does anyone have any experience with using another company you own to handle the rehabs of your rentals/flips? I own a business that can handle some (not all) of rehab work and I have been wondering if it is legal to utilize your own company to do work for your rentals.

I just wonder because obviously I would pay my company as I were a normal customer, but the money is going from my hands, through my company and ultimately back to me; albeit a bit less as I have to pay my guys and pay taxes.

I am sorry that you had to deal with this. Honest people are in short supply and we all have to do our due diligence as customers as well as service providers.

No, no, no, no, no and many more no's. Money isn't money and getting as much as you could is greedy. However if you had done the right thing and represented your client to the best of your abilities for your client and not for you; you would not have been removed from their agent list and you would have gotten more work from that client. The more you do things like that, the more bridges you burn, and eventually you'll burn the wrong bridge and it'll be the end of your career. Always think about the big picture, because money is such a small aspect of it.
