Thanks everyone! Excellent insights! I guess the real question I'm trying to ask is this; if the majority of your income in retirement (life after the W2) is coming from real estate rental income, based on the current tax code, wouldn't it make more sense to invest in a traditional IRA?

I will stick with my current plan of Contributing to both with heavier contributions into the Roth, but I am always pondering the more I learn.  Thanks again!

Jason

While currently having a post tax Roth IRA and Pre Tax 403(b), I've always been more keen on the Roth and contribute more to my Roth (a lot more). But, the more I'm learning about taxes and brackets in retirement the more I start to wonder if Roth is the way to go. As a Real Estate Investor, I anticipate a large chunk of my retirement will be funded by income from rental properties. The IRS sees this as passive income right? So wouldn't my earned income be quite low if it's just a social security and pension check each month? Does the IRS view SS and Pension payments as earned income that is taxable?

I'm in a pretty low bracket right now so I'm too concerned, but I am SUPER interested in what folks on the forums hve to say!

Thanks for any input!

@Chris Levarek I agree with everything you say! Real estate is much more comprehensible than the stock market and worst case scenario in real estate is you still have land and insurance money! I’m considering shifting most/all of my retirement accounts to Real Estate.

I do like the idea of using a Roth IRA as a savings account. Since my timelines can be flexible I can take out contributions on market upswings and let gains just grow tax free.

Hi!

I’m curious what everyone’s retirement strategy is? Are you depending solely on Real Estate? Do you contribute more than a company match to your 401(k)? Do you have IRAs? Taxable brokerage?

If you’re doing a combination, how do you funnel your money into these accounts? (Priorities?)

@Cody  my sister-in-law just locked in 3.375 in TX with 25% down.

Hi!

I have got the itch to invest in Victoria as it seems like there are some pretty good deals there!

My sister-in-law just bought an investment in Cuero and it seems nice out that way, but Victoria seems to have more to offer. From my research it seems the best areas are near the college.

How is your first investment property going? I hope you found a good tenant!

@Michael Barnhartfrom all my online research, it appears as though something in SF-3 zoning is eligible for a conversion!

Does anyone have any experience/familiarity with what the process would be to convert a single family house in SF-3 zoning to a 2 family duplex?

I’m trying to find out if this might be feasible.

Thanks!!

@Mike Price I am looking to Refi a rental duplex in Austin Texas.

Market Value- $500k

Current rent= $3150 total

Current loan Balance/type: $328k on an FHA @ 3.375% + .85% PMI

I’m trying to get south of 4% on this refi to make it make sense.

If you think you can help, let’s chat!

Jason

I know I take

Anyone get any rate quotes for a 30 year conventional on an investment property in the past few days? Are they still ridiculously high?

Thanks!!
