IMO $1000 seems very high for a deposit without even knowing the breakdown of costs. I know many contractors in my area will charge to come out for a quote and then will take that fee out of the work if a contract is signed -- which is totally reasonable, it takes time out of their day to come and walk through a property. However, $1000 to do that and still not give any cost breakdown is very unusual in my mind.
