I wonder if I can get my Pro membership fee back.

You should try house sharing Robert. They manage to seem normal until they move in with you and then within 24 hours you are wondering what on earth you have done.  Is there a house hacking version of this thread? Maybe I should start one.

Good Day,

My wife and I recently moved from South Africa to Brisbane, Australia and are in our mid 20's. We are currently renting a small apartment in the city and want to start using our money more wisely. At the moment we do not know if we should keep on renting and buy an investment property to rent out or should we first buy a new home for us to live in before you can start with an investment?

We are very new to this world and have never bought a home before. We have no idea where to start and luckily my research landed me at BiggerPockets.

Where do one start?

Any help or direction would be really appreciated!

Herman Cronje

Welcome Herman.  I'm on a similar journey.  Good luck.

Hey guys,

I'm 25 from Sydney, completed my Bachelor of Exercise Science (Sport and Exercise) and currently undertaking a postgraduate degree, Masters of Strength and Conditioning. The dream was to eventually work with elite athletes but that may prove quite difficult. Anyway I've always liked learning about things and have recently been fascinated with real estate, especially with the way Sydney real estate has been evolving overtime.

I really want to learn as much as possible about real estate and eventuate slowly into getting my feet wet and building on from there. I found biggerpockets while searching for the best place for a beginner to start learning and have since started listening to their podcasts as well as reading through the ultimate beginners guide. I am currently looking for a book or two I can start reading when I have a chance and have seen that "Millionaire Real Estate Investing" is suggested quite frequently, so I might purchase that book and see how I go.

Looking forward to getting this ball rolling!

Welcome Jason!

I'm just starting out too. I go to a Cashflow Game playing group on a Saturday morning if you are interested in coming along. It's great for learning about investing strategy and networking.

I feel like my situation is somewhat unique, but that said, I'm still learning about this industry so perhaps it's not an uncommon scenario.

Basically I'm Australian and my wife is from Texas. We're currently living and working in Sydney but looking to purchase an investment property in her hometown, which is about an hour an a half out of Dallas.

Welcome to BP Dean! I'm just starting out myself.  I envy your local knowledge in the US.  I will be investing in Australia to begin with.

Lots of the training and success stories on the internet are based on USA investors and properties. When comparing to the Australian market it is proving considerably harder to find the kind of deals you guys can find (In the US).

Can anyone shed some light on if they have had success finding deals with similar ROI and COC return in the AU market?. Basically the rental returns and Flipping margins I am reading about on the USA market seem unrealistic/much more rare in this market. (Hopefully someone can prove me wrong).

Another difference is out Capital Gains Tax. Which can be as big as 50%. This discourages me from taking on the strategy of perusing smaller deals then "Levelling-Up, basically high capital gains tax when selling can slow down the growth unless everything that is bought is a long term rental. This is unlikely. Is the capital gains tax the same for the US? How do other AU investors work with this when they are "Levelling-Up"?

Any advise would be much appreciated, I have learnt form business that adequate research upfront pays dividends for years to follow, looking to take on the same approach here.

Hi Jack. I'm only starting out myself, so I'm not much help answering your question. I just wanted to pop in and say Hi to a fellow Aussie. You're asking good questions though :-) Cheers, Helen
