When running comps how close should they be from the house you are looking at?

I have been trying to find inventory to buy my 1st house. I have been finding it difficult to find inventory and I when do find fixer upper deals I have to compete with 20 or 30 different offers. How can I get my offers accepted so I can start buying properties?
