As long as you understand the tax ramifications of retirement investing holding real estate in your retirement account can be a very good and profitable thing to do. If one owns no real estate you should consider purchasing your first properties outside of a retirement account. Great to have those tax benefits and the cash flow to add to your reserves. After you own a number of properties, depending on your time frame and goals you should consider holding free and clear properties in your retirement accounts. It is possible to leverage retirement money but guarding your principle should be your first concern. If you do not need the cash flow to live on, sheltering ordinary income in a retirement account is a great way to make it grow. If you have the option, a Roth is obviously the best way to go.

@Greg Kuchan

Welcome fellow Bigger Pockets member! This is a great forum and I am sure it will help you learn many facets of the real estate investment world. I purchased my first investment property over 40 years ago and only wish that I had a resource like BP community when I got started! So you are in a good company.

Some say that your net-worth equals your network, and this is the place to make right connections. You should also find investors locally and network with them face-to-face. Find people close to you using MEET feature. Also, look for investor meetings on Meetup.

All the best!
