 @Deshan Kennedy:

keep in mind there are more fees associated with a RE agent using a LLC.

I wasn't aware of this. If anything, I heard that there were more possible tax breaks etc. as a result of an LLC. Thanks for the advice, I will research this further. Also, very good point about finding a mentor. That is on my to do list for March. By the end of this month I hope to have befriended at least two knowledgeable mentors to help guide me.

 @Eric Thomson:

However, while a DBA/LLC may prevent your personal name from coming under scrutiny, it will not protect you from losing your license if a "few deals go wrong".

You are correct. Definitely plan on doing everything by the book and playing fair so nothing like that would happen. Each member of the team would have to realize that their actions are a reflection of all of us and could make or break all of us. Probably the only downside of having an LLC, team/group scenario. Others actions potentially having a negative affect on the greater good of the group as a whole.

Thanks David. You are correct, there are several tax benefits to LLCs etc. as well. I have been doing a lot of research on the topic and how I can make it work for me in my scenario. I thank you for the advice.

Okay cool. Yea your approach sounds good as well. Sometimes less is best. Giving consumers many options (mls search engines) isn't always a good thing, as some consumers can become indecisive as a result. Like you've stated, keeping it simple can be good. Perhaps an "Editors Hot Property Pick" of the week or month, your property or not, may be best. Thus resulting in a less cluttered site as well as a (hopefully) expedited, narrowed down decision made by the consumer. Good luck with your site! Keep us updated with your progress as well!

Thanks for the compliments, Michael.  The video was shot in my living room believe it or not.  I've been doing photo/video work for the last few years before getting into RE, so I shot and edited it all myself.  I also used to code websites, so I set the site up myself.  I used to hand code HTML, but WordPress is a lot easier and more efficient (while still requiring a bit of technical know-how).

And Bryan, you're right, the main purpose of my page will be a squeeze and content page. I mostly want email signups from this site. I'm not too concerned about people being able to search the MLS from my website because they can get that anywhere else (Zillow, Trulia, etc.). I'd rather not clutter up my site with listings that aren't mine. I'll feature my listings on it, of course. But the main purpose is to fill it with content so that it's bringing in SEO traffic and providing more value to the reader.

IDX plugins don't help you rank any better in Google, as far as I know.  The main problem I see with my local competition is that all they have is the IDX and some basic info about themselves.  There's no meat to the site to help Google find them.  So that's my plan of attack to outrank them.

Zillow and Trulia do exactly the same thing with their content. They have tons of useful articles in addition to their all to often albeit "dated" Listings. Not being negative, you have a good game plan and approach. I would just think that also having the listings would add to your repertoire . You mentioned not cluttering your site with listings that aren't yours. Isn't there a way to set your IDX plugin to somehow limit the amount of info displayed on a listing if it isn't yours? Maybe to display just the picture and price with a "call/email me for more info" style tab? Just a thought. Since I haven't done it myself yet I am unsure if that is even possible

As an agent, instead of using my personal name on everything can I use a DBA business instead?

People always talk about "building your business", but without brand recognition these possibilities seem, well, limited. If i ever leave the business I may want to sell the business I've worked hard to build, this seems hard to do if everything is reliant upon my personal name and brokers franchise name. Also, God forbid a few deals go wrong and my personal name comes under scrutiny. With a business name, one could simply close shop, create a new name and maybe start fresh. This would seem fairly difficult if using ones birth name. You cant just go around changing your real life name all willy nilly. Having a DBA name would also allow me to distribute any excess leads to other agents within my network all while under my umbrella. Never to be about the agent in particular, but instead, about the brand which made the connection possible. Besides, in the long run, catchy business names and slogans are embedded into the mind and are always easier to remember than one individuals' name.

So as an agent, is creating a DBA name and conducting all real estate transactions using this name possible? If so, what are some obstacles I may encounter along the way?

Any and all responses are welcomed and will be forever cherished. Thanks a bunch!

Ok ok calm down lol. I'm sure Corey is a nice guy and all but as he stated, he is far from finished. Its merely a squeeze page with an embedded video at this point. Depends on your needs I guess. Will be much more functional once he adds his IDX search tool as you previously suggested.

There's gotta be a loophole to this Mr. Calvin. Please share if there is one. I have another thread about this very topic. Creating your own business. I'm trying to develop a brand. I would like the site to operate similar to Trulia but locally in the sense of lead generation and then distribution of those leads among a closely knit network of agents, not only myself.  There is no "I" in team, as such, I would like to take "I" as in myself, out of this equation and focus on building trust and familiarity with the site. A slogan and all, no kiddin!

End game. Sell the well oiled machine to a broker later down the line. Half of their work will be done if the site is 1st page Google and has become a trusted familiar go-to site for local residents in the area. Thoughts?
