Jon and Peter: I'll definitely look into those areas and keep them in mind. Thanks! Just from what I see on zillow it seems difficult to find a home under 200K in these areas. But I guess it's because they are attractive areas.

Gautam: New Brunfels? That's not even close to Austin, TX. But closer to San Antonio.

Jon: which neighborhoods should I be looking into in East Austin?

Mike: once again, thanks for the great and detailed advice. Here in Denmark everything is small and living more than 15 miles from the city limit decreases the interest in buying a home. Everyone wants to live close to the city here. I'll be interesting to get to know the Texan style of thinking. I already like it.

Thanks for the advice Mike. Again I don't mind living further away from downtown, but I'm also afraid of getting too far away, so it'll be difficult to sell the home again. Denmark prices are similar to CA and the north, so we don't expect anything big. I was thinking 1200-1600 sqft, but then my worry is when I want to sell it again that potential buyers will think the home is too small. I know Americans like it big. We tend to keep things small and compact to save money leaning toward the tiny house movement.

In the bigger cities in Denmark there's always neighborhoods that stay attractive no matter what the global financial situation is. If you buy something there you know you'll earn on it or sell it for the same. Does neighborhoods like these exist in Austin? If they do, I know it won't be my first purchase, but that's my goal. First, it's a pleasure to read all your advice. Since I'm from Scandinavia, for those of you, who don't know much about, where I come from, we're know for being a bit reserved. It's more difficult to find help, when you need it. I appreciate your willingness to help me and my family get a good start in America.

Mike and Jon: Thanks for your confirmation to rent first.

Mike: I'm not so happy about renovation. I don't mind getting my hands dirty at all. But I'm afraid what I'll get into. All the unexpected things that can pop up when renovating. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can end up paying over price for a home, and have to put a lot of money into renovation and at the end I've lost a lot of money. I must admit I have no experience with any kind of real etate so I only speak from my instincts.

Brian: Great to know that there are other places to look for jobs for my wife. I'll keep that in mind. Like your acquaintance we've also found homes on zillow within our budget. We don't have a need to live anywhere in particular, I just want us to live somewhere smart concerning REI. That means I want us to find a home in a neighborhood with great potential for REI.

Thanks for the advise. I've read that there's a lot of traffic on the bridges downtown, so we'll keep that in mind.

My wife is a RN, and will be looking for a job at a hospital in Austin when we get there. I'm an entrepreneur, who develops webshop and work from home. So we have no clue where we'll live. We are planning for rent a place for the first six months to learn and experience the city, before making any drastic decisions concerning buying a home.

Since the average home price is 200K and I'm looking for a home 25% below the average price does that mean 1) if I find a home within my price range it's usually to good to be true? 2) a good deal? 3) homes within my price range doesn't fit my needs (+ 2 bed and newer build)?

Hey BP-members! I'm a young man from Copenhagen, Denmark in Europe. My American wife and I are planning to move to Austin with our newborn. She's from Houston, TX, but I have convinced her to move to Austin, TX. We are looking for a home (130K-170K) in a popular neighborhood, hoping the home will increase in value over the next few years, and then sell it. It'll be my first REI. I've been advised to buy a home and live in it as the smartest start on REI, which I have big interest in. My question is where in Austin area you would advice me to look for a home? We would like to have at least a 2 bed or maybe a 3 bed home, and it needs to be a newer home to make sure there won't be any trouble with the home's condition. I've looked at Round Rock, Cedar Park, Pflugerville. All areas north of Austin. As far as I understand these areas are growing communities and affordable. Am I looking in the right area or should I look somewhere else? People talk about the east side, but they also say there's bigger risk there?
