Post: Inheriting tenants at my first property

Good afternoon,

My offer was just accepted on my first property. It will be a 3 family home in CT. I will be owner occupying.

One tenant is moving out and the other the tenants lease will be ending around the time that we close. The tenant who's lease is ending is looking to move into the most expensive unit in the house ($100 more than the one they are  in now). Should I just accept that they have been  good paying tenants or do a full screening on them seeing as their lease is up and I have the opportunity? (This is a family with children) I feel like I should probably screen them but I'll take some advice from the more experienced investors on here.

Thank you,

-Benjamin Lemieux

@Charlie MacPherson Thank you for your insight! Some great tips in your response that I will be able to include in my letter.

I am putting in a offer on my first potential investment property on Monday. I will be hopefully owner occupying a tri-plex in CT. Is it a good idea to submit a personal letter/picture with the offer? If so, what kind of things do you normally include to give it that personal touch?

Thank you,

-Ben

Tomas, I am in a similar boat. I am just getting ready to look at my first multi family this fall. I have spent the last year educating myself and I would be lying if I said I didn't have some sort of nerves or doubt. Who wouldn't though!? This is a large decision, but I believe that it's a shot worth taking. The chance at financial freedom isn't one that many people have! Do your due diligence and go for it! Best of luck to you.

I am a 28 year old getting into investing from the CT area. Spent my last two years getting 100% debt free. I work overnights so I have a lot of time on my hands and think this may be a great way to invest. I am getting ready to buy my first property this fall. Looking to start by owner occupying a triplex. I look forward to all the valuable information you all provide here.
