6 Home Safety Tips to Keep Your Safe

Normal 1516820376 Ssb Senior Home Check

Protecting your home, even when it's vacant is something many of us think about.  There are some basic things that we can do such as making sure the smoke alarms have working batteries, the doors are locked, not putting our spare key in an obvious location, etc.  But there less obvious ways that we can protect our houses.

1. When you're away on vacation, putting your lights on a timer can make it look like someone is home and discourage intruders.

2. Sliding glass doors can be secured with a bar in the track to prevent it from being opened.

3. Keeping blinds or curtain closed in rooms with valuable equipment keeps intruders from seeing what is inside.  If they don't know there are valuables inside, they will most likely not be interested.

4. If you're gone for a few days have a trusted friend or neighbor get your mail and any packages that are left at your door so it is not obvious no one is home.

5. Make sure your house number is easy to see.  If you need emergency services the last thing you want happening is them searching for your house number.

6. Keep your keys beside you on the nightstand.  If you hear an intruder, you can hit the panic button on your keys and your car alarm will startle your intruder into fleeing.
