Why do insurance agents/brokers ask for social at inquiry

Maybe the insurance experts know. I have been calling multiple insurance brokers and agents to get a quote for a rental property to insure. Most of them asked for the social security number, which I find very strange and don't like at all to give out. I never had that happen the previous years. Is there a real reason for that?

Also, please pm me if you know of an insurance company that uses simple procedures for adding properties to the policy or for changing the status from occupied to unoccupied and back when necessary. So fare I have received stretches of silence when I asked that question.
