Wholesaling in todays economy?

Hi everyone. I'm ready to get serious about REI, but I'm not sure where to start. Wholesaling sounds great, but how has the game changed with todays economy? I bought Steve Cook's "Wholesaling for Quick cash" a few years ago, and I question if the strategies discussed in the book still apply. Any advice? Any suggested reading? Thanks!
