Tips for finding comps in Texas.

Does anyone from the area have any tips on how to accurately locate comps? I know the MLS could provide that info but I do not currently have access. I also do not want to bother my real estate agent contacts right now as I am just getting the ball rolling. Any help would be much appreciated.
